The Urdaneta City University (UCU) s now qualified as one of the hosts of Speedtest.net by Ookla, one of the world’s most powerful speed test tools.
UCU passed the requirements by the Ookla, which included the internet speed which requires an upload and download capacity of at least 100 Mbps for municipalities and small cities. The university itself runs a Fiber Optic Connection which uses light to transmit data.
Ookla Speedtest’s analysis measures the latency and speed of the user’s connection from different servers around the world. Each test result shows the download rate (rate of speed from the server to the visitor’s computer) and the upload rate (rate of speed from the visitor’s computer to the server). Using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the tests can be done within the visitor’s web browser.
As of 2014, Ookla boasts of more than 60 billion speed tests done since they started in 2006.
Meanwhile, students of Urdaneta City University (UCU) tested the accessibility of the newly-installed Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) access points around the university in time with the opening of classes in Aug. 2016.
“It would really help us in our assignments especially so with students who basically cannot afford to have their own Wi-Fi at home. It also allows us to minimize our expenses renting computers outside” Jessa Reyes, Accountancy student, said during the interview.
Access points were placed strategically by the Office of the University Facilities around the university in the Forest, Friendship Center, Chocolate Park, Umbrella Tree, and Pedro Orata Park.
“Hopefully, ma-expand natin ito at makarating hanggang sa gym and to the new buildings,” said Warren Novio, one of the university’s technical support staff.
It is only accessible to all enrolled students. Their ID numbers and their birthdays serve as their username and password which can be modified later, respectively, to be able to connect to the internet. It gives a 30-minute access and afterwards a student may log-in again. If the student is not using the account for 5 minutes, it logs out automatically.
This system is also connected to the Reference Library and the Friendship Center’s tablets. #
