Urdaneta City University (UCU), through its Center for Student Leadership and Development, conducted a seminar titled “LISTEN UP: The Vital Role of Hearing in Education and Life” on April 27, 2026, at the University Gymnasium, highlighting the essential role of hearing in academic success and everyday life.

The seminar was attended by first-year, second-year, and transferee students, while third- and fourth-year students joined via Facebook Live, allowing broader participation across year levels.

Designed to raise awareness and build practical skills, the seminar covered key aspects of hearing health—from understanding hearing loss and its impact on communication and socialization to recognizing early signs of impairment and the need for timely intervention. It also explored diagnosis and hearing function testing, alongside preventive strategies and available management and treatment options.

The session further emphasized the role of effective listening in improving focus, comprehension, and overall academic performance—skills vital both in the classroom and in everyday interactions.

Serving as the resource speaker was Prof. Ronald Rey Mamaril Menor, RN, MAN, MCIAud, a faculty member from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Throughout the seminar, he provided practical examples and real-life situations related to the topics discussed, helping translate complex concepts into relatable insights that resonated with both students and teachers.

During the question-and-answer portion, students actively engaged by raising clinical and course-related inquiries, with the speaker offering clear, relevant explanations that further deepened participants’ understanding of the subject matter.

Through initiatives like this, UCU advances student development by promoting health awareness and lifelong learning, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities—in fostering a more informed and inclusive academic community.
