UCU, CHO collabs in strengthening campus-wide HIV/AIDS awareness

Urdaneta City University (UCU), in partnership with the City Health Office (CHO) of Urdaneta, hosted the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 8, 2025 at the University Gymnasium.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, educators, and students taking Nursing and Midwifery programs to honor those affected by HIV and AIDS, promoting awareness and solidarity.

Informative topics were discussed such as “SOGIE 101” by John Leonard Caluag, the Director of UCU-DRRMO, and “HIV 101” by Elmer Christian Jacob, the STD-AIDS Prevention Program Head from CHO, both providing critical insights on gender inclusivity and HIV prevention.

The symbolic candle lighting, led by Diana Tablac of the Association of Midwifery Students, and the HIV Awareness Pledge, delivered by Florence Nightingale Club President Matt Weiser C. Paulmino, showcased the commitment of UCU’s student body to HIV advocacy.

HIV testing and free condom distribution were facilitated by Anne Marie Trinidad and Geisha Faye Tabonida of the Pilipinas Shell Foundation – SHiP, emphasizing the importance of health partnerships.

Through this memorial, UCU reaffirmed its dedication to honoring lives lost, supporting those affected, and promoting a proactive, informed approach to public health.
