UCU strengthens commitment to gender inclusivity, conducts GAD capability training

In a significant stride toward promoting Gender and Development (GAD) initiatives, Urdaneta City University (UCU) conducted the "GAD Mainstreaming and Capability Building Training for Research and Extension Coordinators" on October 11, 2023, at the UCU Cafeteria.

Attended by 45 participants which included Extension and Research Coordinators, Directors, Deans, and Department Heads, the endeavor aimed to empower these academic leaders to advance gender equality and inclusivity.

Acting University President Dr. Amihan April C. Mella-Alcazar, in her opening statement, emphasized the university's commitment and mandate to intensify GAD advocacy in research, extension, and GAD curriculum. Her remarks set the tone for a day of meaningful discussions and learning.

The training program featured two vital topics delivered by esteemed experts: Dr. Romary R. Lincod, the Director for Gender Development and Deputy Director for Administration, Quality Assurance, and Planning at Pangasinan State University - Lingayen Campus, discussed the "GAD-Responsive Curriculum Program;” and Dr. Randy Joy M. Ventayen, the Director for Research and Development from the same institution, delved into the "Gender Responsive Research and Extension Program."

Lincod's presentation went beyond outlining the Commission on Higher Education's mandate for integrating Gender and Development into university programs. She stressed the significance of updating the GAD database, which can serve as a valuable resource for developing GAD mainstreamed programs, research initiatives, and curriculum.

Moreover, Lincod underscored the importance of preventing all forms of gender-based discrimination in academic instruction and strongly recommended the inclusion of GAD in the teaching strategy of UCU's faculty members.

Ventayen, on the other hand, focused on the key performance indicators for successful GAD Research and Extension. He also discussed the IMRAD (Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion) format for research and thesis writing, providing participants with valuable insights into conducting research with a gender-responsive lens.

An open forum where participants engaged with the lecturers was initiated as Lincod offered essential advice, urging caution when using gender-sensitive language and encouraging respect and acceptance toward individuals' choices in defining their roles.

Meanwhile, Ventayen extended his support to participants aspiring to have their research papers published, offering guidance on achieving this goal.

In addition to the newfound knowledge and insights gained from the resource speakers, the training facilitated a partnership between Urdaneta City University and Pangasinan State University, aimed at advancing Gender and Development and Research and Extension initiatives. This collaboration promises to further strengthen UCU's commitment to promoting gender equality, inclusivity, and academic excellence.
