UCU, CHR partner in human rights promotion

Urdaneta City University and the Commission on Human Rights Region 1 (CHR R1) teamed up for a seminar on human rights education on May 16, 2023 at the University Gymnasium, fostering a deeper understanding of human rights principles among the youth.

The said seminar drew participants from the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) and keynote speakers from CHR who talked about a broad range of topics, including the history of human rights, international human rights law, social justice, and the role of education in promoting human rights.

Atty. Melanie C. William of CHR R1 shed light on the key provisions of RA 7438 and emphasized that the act was enacted to protect the fundamental rights of individuals who find themselves under arrest, detention, or undergoing custodial investigation.

Meanwhile, CHR R1 Information Officer Mr. Danilo Balino highlighted the urgency of addressing the rights of children in situations of conflict. He stressed the importance of creating safe spaces, ensuring access to quality education, and providing psychological support for children affected by war, displacement, and other forms of violence.

As the seminar concluded, future criminologists expressed their commitment to taking concrete actions to safeguard human rights in their future profession. Faculty members also vowed to incorporate human rights principles into their teaching practices, collaborate with local and international organizations, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize human rights.

 

The said endeavor was the first collaboration of UCU and CHR R1 on human rights education since they sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on December 7, 2022.
